Chapter XI

Though the city of Brighton was greatly entertaining, the prospect of doing something new was not unwelcome, and so it was that Elizabeth and Harriet were pleased to hear of Blanche’s plans for a picnic in the countryside. Upon asking about the guests—which would include Elizabeth, Harriet, and Colonel Forster—Elizabeth and Harriet were told casually by Blanche: “Oh, there shall be a few officers there, a few more interesting residents of Brighton, and one or two others.” They were not able to pry much more from her than that.

If there was one thing Blanche was skilled at doing, it was molding the emotions of others to her wishes, and she managed to induce Elizabeth and Harriet to experience considerable excitement about the delicacies that would be prepared and the surroundings which had been carefully chosen for their enjoyment. Elizabeth was particularly pleased at the thought of leaving the city for a short time to be surrounded by the beauty of nature. The sea was quite lovely, yet Elizabeth had a fondness for grass and trees which the city did not quite satiate. Though the picnic would not be intimate, as it appeared there would be quite a number of people present, it would still be an improvement on the crowded bustle of Brighton.

Yes, Elizabeth was truly looking forward to the venture. The morning of the picnic, however, she received a letter which surprised her exceedingly and made her briefly forget the event of which she had been thinking so frequently. It began:
